The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets men’s hockey team played their season opener at River Falls. This year, for the second in a row, the Jackets missed their shot at the W, losing to Falls 5 to 3 in the first game.
The ‘Jackets team is very young this year, with 15 of the 19 men on the ice residing in either the freshman or sophomore class. That youth shined after a goal-less first and second period for the ‘Jackets, coming back from 3-0 and scoring all three of their goals in the third, only to be continually out-scored by Falls players.
The second game of the weekend played by the Jackets went considerably better. River Falls pulled the early lead in the first, scoring two goals and lead into the second half. The ‘Jackets, undaunted by this, followed up by scoring the hat trick in the second, leading to a 3-2 lead of which they would retain for the rest of the game.
The ‘Jackets are off to a 1-1 start of the season, and we’ll be watching to see how they do next week when they play St. John’s University on the road.
