On Saturday, December 12, the UW-Superior Men’s basketball team took on the visiting UW-Whitewater Warhawks, who came in with an 8-0 record and ranked as the number 5 Division III team in the country.
UW-Superior was looking to put a streak of wins together after a strong win over Northwestern College and looking for an upset victory.
The Warhawks had other ideas as they put the game away early and the Yellowjackets went into the locker room at halftime down big, 38-52.
UW-Superior never recovered, despite having four players in double digits including Bronson Byrne (Freshman-Chanhassen, MN) coming off the bench and scoring 12 points.
UW-Whitewater finished on top, 93-72, securing their ninth straight win over the Yellowjackets.
The ‘Jackets redeemed themselves on December 14 as they took on Northland College at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
The Yellowjackets started the game off on a 12-0 run and never allowed the Lumberjacks to have the lead throughout the game and went into halftime up 46-21.
The ‘Jackets continued their dominance in the second half with Ben Aalfs leading the team on the offensive end with 22 points and 3 assists, while Dustin Ritchie helped the Yellowjackets stifle the Lumberjack offense with 4 blocks and 2 steals as Ritchie and company held the Lumberjacks to 23% shooting and forced 20 turnovers.
The Yellowjackets finished the game with six players in double digits and an impressive 95-45 win over Northland College.
The Yellowjackets now head across the bridge to Duluth, Minnesota to take on the College of St. Scholastica for the second time this year. UW-Superior won the first game on November 28, 78-59.
