Yellowjackets take third place at Lakeland College tourney

The University of Wisconsin - Superior Women’s Basketball Team went 1-1 at the Lakeland College Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 21 to place third.
Friday they received a tough loss by one point with a score of 57-56 to North Park. TheYellowjacketstook the lead for the first time in the game thirty seconds in and didn’t look back, holding the lead through the rest of the first half. At one point had a lead of ten points, but North Park was able to pull within threerightbefore halftime.
The ‘Jackets were lead by ConnieUrmanski, a freshman from Edgar, WI, with a total of nine points. She also went three for three from the three point line. KelseyThingvolda junior from Crystal, MN, led the team in rebounds in the first half with a total of four.
In the second half theYellowjacketswere able to keep their lead for the first five minutes, and then North Park was able to tie it up and eventually take the lead. The ‘Jackets surged back and took the lead back with five minutes to go, but then lost it with only about a minute left. TheYellowjacketsjust couldn’t get the basketball back in the hoop after that, missing a total of five times in the last two minutes.
It was a tough loss, but the players showed a lot of promise.Urmanskifinished with sixteen points, shooting 50 percent from the three point line. ThingvoldandBriDavis, a sophomore from Hermantown, MN, both had twelve points. Davis finished the game with the most rebounds with five.
The ‘Jackets came into the second game against Lawrence hungry for a win. They picked up their win, beating Lawrence by eight points with a score of 66-58.
The first ten minutes of the game was tight with neither team pulling away from the other. Then theYellowjacketsstarted to pull away slowly and entered the half with a nine point lead. In thefirst half, the ‘Jackets were able to hold Lawrence to 19.4 percent shooting. At the same time, theYellowjacketswere able to hit 45.8 percent of their own shots.
Thingvoldled the team in scoring at halftime with seven, but was followed close behind by fellow teammatesDavis, Urmanskiand KatieZavodny, a sophomore fromBoyceville, WI. They each had six points going into the half.
The second half was all ‘Jackets, who increased their lead all the way up to nineteen points at one point in the second half. They made it a point to make sure they kept their lead this time after halftime. The game was never close in the second half, with Lawrence only able to bring the ‘Jackets’ lead down to seven at the beginning of the second half, and proving to be incapable of getting closer.
Four players were able to score ten points or higher for theYellowjackets. Zavodnylead the team in points this game with a total of fifteen, she also lead in rebounds with eight.Thingvold, Urmanski andDavis were the other players to score over ten points, helping the team to achieve their second win of the season, and to bring their record to 2-1.
