Fresh off their upset of Division II University of Minnesota-Duluth, the UW-Superior Men’s Basketball team continued their winning ways on November 28 as they battled the College of St. Scholastica Saints.

Both teams entered the contest looking for their second win on the season, with the Yellowjackets at 1-1 and the Saints 1-2 on the year.

The Saints kept the game close throughout the first half, despite only shooting 29% from the field, and forced the Yellowjackets to turn the ball over five times in the first half.

The Saints took a 25-23 lead over the ‘Jackets after a three-pointer by Danny Schmits with 4:45 left in the first half.

However, that was the last lead the Saints had as the Yellowjackets finished the half on a 15-5 run and went into the locker room with a 37-28 lead. UWS tallied eight offensive rebounds which translated to 11 second-chance points in the first half.

UW-Superior started the second half by pushing the margin to 10 after Dan Culy (Rice Lake, Wi), who finished with 14 points, made a three-pointer on the ‘Jackets’ first possession. Eventually a 21-point lead was built, putting the score at 69-48 with 6:52 left in the game.

The Yellowjackets shot 50% in the second half, making 14 of 28.

Junior Forward Jake Smith (Rhinelander, WI) led the team in scoring for the second game in a row with 19 points. Smith also had seven rebounds.

Dustin Ritchie (Superior) scored 11 for the ‘Jackets and shot 3-3 from beyond the arc to help UW-Superior secure their first home win of the year with a score of 78-59.

The ‘Jackets will head to River Falls, Wisconsin on December 2 to take on the Falcons who are 2-3 so far this year.

The Falcons were picked to finish sixth in the WIAC Preseason Poll among WIAC Sports Information Directors, just ahead of the predicted number seven Yellowjackets.

The ‘Jackets will try and contain UW-River Falls’ three WIAC All-Conference Honorable Mentions, Jontae Koonkaew, Jake Voeltz, Aaron Anderson, all returning this year on a squad that lost only one player from last year.
