After nearly a month off, the UW-Superior women’s hockey team came out strong January 16 and 17 as they held the College of St. Benedict Blazers off the score sheet and won 5-0 Friday night and 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
On Friday night the Jackets did not look like they had been off for a month. At only 9:36 into the first period freshman forward Chelsey Wierschem took a feed from senior Jessica Tyra and buried her third goal of the year.
Only 2:31 later, the Jackets kept their momentum going as the Superior tandem of Ashlee Olson and Ashley Martin hooked up to give the Jackets the 2-0 lead. The goal was Olson’s third of the year.
That was not all for the Jackets, however as nearly two minutes later, senior Jasmine Pollock took a pass from
Olson and potted her team leading fourth goal of the year.
From there the game seemed to go in the Jackets’ favor as Tyra scored midway through the second period and Wierschem scored her second goal of the game on a powerplay 3:50 into the final period.
Although she was not tested too much, senior Melissa Kunzelman steered away 11 shots to record her second shutout of the year. The win improved her record to 6-3-2 on the year. Wierschem and Tyra ended the game with 3 points a piece while Olson tallied 2.
The game on Saturday afternoon started out a bit slower as Blazers goalie Lauren Herzog turned aside 10 Jacket shots with no goals were scored in the first period.
With the score knotted up at zeros midway through the second period, the game turned into the Ashley Martin show. At 13:47, Martin took a nice feed from senior Jodi Holland and ripped a shot past Herzog to put the Jackets on the board. Martin was not done there, however.
At 3:08 into the third period she scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Pollock. Two goals from Martin were all the Jackets needed as solid defense and goaltending led to a second straight shutout win.
Senior Goalie Amie Meyer, playing in her second game of the year, stopped all 16 attempted shots and recorded her second win of the year.
With the two shutouts, it has been 148:52 since the Jackets have allowed a goal and have only allowed 2 goals in their last 5 games.
With points in both games, team captain Pollock now has a seven game point streak and also leads the team with 10 points.
The Jackets return to action next weekend at 7:00 PM on January 22 as they take on rival University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in an important conference series.
