It’s getting warmer, the snow is melting, and lakes are thawing. This must mean that it is time for the baseball season to get underway.
“We are just ready to play!” said captain Brett Olson.
The team has been practicing for a few weeks now and had their first double header of the season at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Monday, March 8.
There are many familiar faces on the team this year including four captains, Sean Cummings, Alex Lagadin, Brett Olson, and Paul Schlangen. To join the team this year are nine freshmen, consisting of mostly pitchers and infielders. Six transfer student-athletes also join the team, consisting of mostly pitchers and infielders. The team hopes to keep improving from their record last year of 14-26 and 6-18 in conference. This included winning a few games against conference power houses UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh. They are hungry to get out the field and show what they can do.
Their first game of the season started with a tough 3-9 loss against Macalester College, but the team never gave up and came back to win the second game, 6-0.
It was Olson, a senior from Eau Claire, with the big bat hitting three for four in the double header and bringing in one RBI (run batted in).
Lagadin, a senior from Thunder Bay, Ontario, was awarded with the first win of the season pitching three innings with no hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
The Yellowjackets came back from the Metrodome with a record of 1-1, including a shutout to head to their next game, which will be during spring break. The team travels to Vero Beach, FL and will play seven games against colleges from Maryland, New Hampshire, Iowa, and Minnesota, including the College of St. Scholasitca.
The Yellowjackets start spring break play on March 14 against St. Mary’s from Maryland.
