On Friday, Feb. 19, the University of Wisconsin-Superior Theater Department will open the show “Wiley & The Hairy Man” at 7:30 p.m. in Manion Theater.
The play is an African-American tale written by Susan Zeder that highlights the adventure of a young boy and his faithful dog into the swamp, where the protagonist must overcome his own fear and the Hairy Man.
The play is directed by Liz Larson. She is a teacher at Duluth Central High School where she has been working with drama students for thirteen years.
“I hope it’s a little scary, to remind everyone of what it’s like to be afraid of the dark and the boogeyman,” said Ms. Larson.
She also stated, “I think students should come because we don’t want to do children’s theatre, we want to do adult theatre. Even though it is a child’s play, we hope that it will still help students get over their fears as well.”
Performer Kyle Olson, a junior at UWS says the show will be lively.
“Expect a very energetic, enjoyable play that sends a message about facing your fear. This is a great chance to truly enjoy and appreciate theater and since it’s targeted towards children it will have the energy to entertain adults as well,” said Olson.
The show runs six times, including opening night as well as Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m., Feb. 26 & 27 at 7:30 and Feb. 28 at 1:00p.m.
Ticket prices for this event are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $6 for children and $2 for UWS students with a valid identification card. Groups of 10 or more people are also $6 per person.
