The University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team came out strong Tuesday night, defeating the second-ranked Gustavus Adolphus Gusties 3-2.

The ‘Jackets and Gusties both started out the game with end-to-end action, but Senior Melissa Kunzelman and Gustavus Adolphus’ Emily Klatt were shutting the door.

UWS finally got on the board midway through the first as Junior Shana Katz potted her second of the season on the power play, with the helpers going to Juniors Lindsey Legree and Allie Pullar.

After the goal, the remainder of the first frame went scoreless. At the beginning of the second period, Gusties defenseman Meagan Wanecke took a high sticking penalty, sending UWS to their third power play of the game.

1:23 into the penalty, Shana Katz took a cross ice feed from Legree and tallied her second goal of the night, putting the ‘Jackets up 2-0. Brittany Dunkel received the secondary assist on the goal.

With UWS in somewhat control of the game, Gusties forward Kirstin Peterson took the puck from the neutral zone and did the rest as she roofed her first goal of the year making, it a 2-1 game. With the momentum, the Gusties continued their relentless pressure and finally tied the game up at 14:12 of the second.

With the game tied 2-2, both teams came out firing in the third until freshman forward Chelsey Wierschem buried a loose puck in front of the net to tally her first career goal and, most importantly, put the ‘Jackets in the lead 3-2. Superior natives Ashlee Olson and Ashley Martin got the assists on the goal.

With the lead, Kunzelman took over once again behind the pipes and made crucial saves down the stretch to propel the ‘Jackets over the Gusties.

In all, Kunzelman made 20 saves, improving her record to 3-2-1 on the season. Legree and Katz both finished the night with 2 points. Legree is now in share of the scoring lead for the ‘Jackets with Senior Jess Tyra.

The ‘Jackets jump right back into action Friday night as they take on UW-River Falls on the road. The next home game is Tuesday, November 24 against Bethel at 7:05pm.
