During UWS Preview Days on Wed. Oct. 14, Admissions, First Year Experience, Academic Advising and Career Services held the very first Majors and Opportunities Market – an informational fair on different majors and organizations.

As students and parents walked around the Majors and Opportunities Market held in the Health and Wellness Center, representatives from booths for various departments such as chemistry, mathematics, Residence Life, Career Services and many more were there to help answer questions and give information.

The Majors and Opportunities Market allowed students and parents to get to meet people in person, and to learn more about organizations.

“I think people will feel more welcome and comfortable in person,” said Residence Life representative Kathryn DeBoer. “Even though people can find the information online, they will probably find it more comfortable to talk face-to-face with someone about it.”

The market is also a great way for many students with undeclared majors to help discover majors within their interests.

“We have a large population of students who are discovering their interests or who are undecided majors,” said Career Services Coordinator Kathy Pykkonen. “And this will give them an active event with different departments and different academic opportunities on campus.”

The event also allowed students to look around, talk to professors and discover different opportunities UWS has to offer.

“This is a great way to talk to people and professors,” said student Samantha Licht. “It's also a great way to tack-out many questions before deciding majors.”

Overall, the Majors and Opportunities Market is a great way for students to learn about the different options there are.  The event is also there to help students figure out what their interests are, and help them figure out what type of major fulfills their interests.

“My advice would be to try and follow in what you're interested in,” said mathematics and computer science professor Diana Kennedy. “You want to have a career that you'll be happy with, not dreading.”
