The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s track and field team was in St. Paul, Minn. this past Saturday where they competed in the Holst Invite hosted by Concordia University.

It was a really cold day with high winds. This made it difficult for the runners to have good times. Despite this fact, there were still some runners who put up their best times of the season.

Scott Behling was able to cross the finish line first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:12.29. This was the first time this season that Behling had won the 1500 meter race. Behling is hoping that he can make the podium (top eight finishers) at the WIAC conference meet on May 7 - 8.

Matt Reijo was able to finish second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.12 seconds. Jake Guello ran his first 3K steeplechase race this past weekend was able to finish in fifth place with a time of 12:07.48. Kevin Griepentrog cracked the top ten in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.64 seconds.

The Yellowjacket 4x100 meter relay teams placed third and fourth. The third place team consisted of Reijo, Kevin Olson, Will Hermanson and Tyler Houghton. The other Yellowjacket team that crossed the line right after them was made up of Griepentrog, Shane Trentor, Jamere Bowers and Nils Hansen.

Olson placed sixth in the pole vault where he was able to clear 13 feet, 3.5 inches. Hansen placed in both the shot put (sixth) with 11.45 meters and the discus (eighth) with a throw of 38.07 meters.

On the women’s side of things, Katie Capriglione provisionally qualified for nationals in the hammer throw. She placed second with a throw of 50.22 meters. Capriglione was also able to get second place in the shot put with a mark of 11.21 meters.

Whitney Wise finished seventh in the javelin throwing for 26.17 meters. Becca Kent took eighth place in the discus with a hurl of 30.09 meters.

In running events, Samantha Anderson crossed the line in 2:40.35 to place nineth in the 800 meter run. Natasha Hinzmann finished in sixth place in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 13:44.75.

Coach Drexler was happy with how the day turned out. Even though the times were slow due to the wind, he was satisfied with the high placing by many Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets compete again this Fri., April 22 at Griggs Field on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus in the North Country Invite. Events are scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m.
