On the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus in the 1980s, this time of year would have brought the football team home with a time-honored tradition. After a twenty year recess from a school homecoming, students teamed up to restart an old tradition at UWS.
“We picked men’s soccer because the alumni weekend is held in the fall,” said Ben Mooney, a student at UWS. “So it would be a homecoming for all of our alumni.” Although the timing of alumni weekend didn't coincide with the new homecoming weekend this year, Mooney and other students hope that for next year and years to come it will become a homecoming tradition.
On Saturday, October 22, the women’s soccer game will start at 12:00 p.m. and the men’s at 2:00 p.m. Due to construction on the UWS soccer field, the women’s game will be held the Superior High School soccer field. The men’s game will be at the Duluth Public School Stadium located in West Duluth. Fan buses for the men’s soccer game will leave the MWC at 1:30 p.m.
To prepare for students first UWS homecoming game, many activities have been organized. Every day of the week people will be wearing something different to show their school spirit:
On the night of Thursday, October 20, students are invited to a bonfire behind Crownhart Hall at 8 p.m. On the following night (Friday), there will be a pep rally at the Mertz Gymnasium at 7 p.m. At the women’s game on Saturday, the BBQ Club will have a cookout and provide free food to game-goers.
