UWS A Cappella Choir starts slow, delivers

The lights dimmed, the talking hushed, and the concert began. From that moment until the last song, the UW-Superior A Cappella Choir and their musical companions kept the audience entertained last Tuesday night at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior.

It started with a dreadfully slow march set to a beautiful Christmas carol from medieval times. The black dresses on the women and black suits on the men made the scene even more somber. The songs picked up rhythm and beat as the night progressed. During breaks for the vocal chords, the Chamber Choir and String Quartet added beautiful music to the night. The music of the drum, tambourine, piano and pipe organ added to the echoing melodies of voices.

A new version of The Twelve Days of Christmas added flavor to the concert, although the speaking portions were completely lost in the expanse of the cathedral. 'Oh Come, All Ye Faithful' was the last song of the night and the choir seemed to sing it out far more brightly and beautifully than all the previous songs. That carol received a standing ovation from the audience, the length of which was a testament to the work that the UWS choir and director put into preparing for the concert.

The UWS A Cappella Choir concert is definitely something to mark on the calendar for next Christmas, as new voices and music are added to the beautiful setting of the Cathedral of Christ the King.
