The University of Wisconsin - Superior Men’s Basketball team took on the Eagles of Northwestern College at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Wednesday night. After the tough loss to WIAC Conference opponent UW-Platteville on December 5th, the ‘Jackets looked to bounce back against Northwestern.
Jake Smith (Rhinelander, WI) led all scorers with 22 points and also added 5 assists and 4 rebounds after scoring his 1,000th career point against Platteville.
After allowing the Eagles to get out to an early 23-19 lead, the ‘Jackets stormed back and outscored the Eagles 22-2 over the last 7:50 of the first half as Dan Culy (Rice Lake, WI) scored 9 of his 15 points in that span as he drained 3 three pointers to give UW-Superior the commanding 41-25 lead at the half.
The Yellowjackets continued their run as the second half began and pushed their margin to 17 as Dwight Hill (Chicago, IL), who finished the game with 12 points, made a jumper to give the ‘Jackets a 47-30 lead.
Northwestern then stormed back as they chipped away at the Yellowjackets lead and eventually cut the margin to two with 3:30 left in the half as the Eagles caught fire from the three point line and went 6-12 from beyond the arc to put the game at 62-60 in the Yellowjackets favor but the effort was not enough as the ‘Jackets held on for the win and finished with a 73-64 victory over the Northwestern College Eagles.
