Google is planning to launch a new service that will make Internet speeds the fastest anyone has seen yet, and Superior and Duluth want to be apart of this country changing service.
You may have seen the Facebook group called “Google Twin Ports - Bring Super Fast Internet to the Duluth Superior Area” or heard about it on the news also refered to as Google Fiber.
Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country, and we can be a part of it here in Superior.
“The Google network is expected to deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections,” reports Google’s website.
This isn’t just about having fast Internet connections; it is also about building new infrastructure. This new service could improve the lives of many including students at the University of Wisconsin - Superior, but it also could bring a lot more jobs to the area. A faster Internet connection could attract new businesses.
Alphonse Chesky, a UWS student, is thrilled about the possibility of Google Fiber coming to campus and to the area.
“I think it is important to recognize our Chancellor as he has given his support to helping make this happen, along with members of our Business Department faculty, and Math & Computer Science,” Chesky stated.
Chesky noted on how important this is for campus. More jobs mean more internships and full time jobs for students and that will benefit the community and the campus years after students come and go.
“It's just cool. Imagine being able to say, ‘We brought Google to UWS/Superior/Duluth, and we are a better community for it,’” Chesky said.
There is currently an online petition to bring this service to the Twin Ports. Click here to visit the website. Once there, scroll down to the third step and fill out the nomination form. It only takes a few minutes and just asks some basic questions about how good or bad your Internet connection works in the Twin Ports area.
