Tune in, turn on, drop out

A University of Wisconsin-Superior student has been at the Capitol for nearly two weeks now and says he won’t leave until Governor Walker’s budget repair bill is killed or altered.

Legal studies student Taylor Tengwall has called the Capitol building home since February 15. The junior from Duluth says he’s not willing to leave, even if it means he’ll get behind in his school work.

“I haven’t been able to contact many of my professors so the plan is that I’ll at least reduce my credits," Tengwall said. "But if needed I’ll withdraw for the semester. It’s just the semester compared to the weight of this. It’s so severe, it’s like this looming behemoth. Yeah, if it takes it I’ll withdraw from school but it hasn’t been official yet.”

Tengwall is one of about 40 protesters refusing to leave the capitol, despite a 4:00 p.m. Sunday deadline that said protesters needed to clear the building so it could be cleaned. Tengwall says the police presence does not scare him.

“Am I worried about getting arrested personally? No, no not at all. If I get arrested, so be it. I’ll be here the next day," Tengwall said.

It's been an emotional experience for the UW-Superior student. And while he’s missed two weeks of class, Tengwall says he’s learning more in the capitol than he ever could in a classroom.

“I’ve learned the importance of running for office," Tengwall said. "Right now it seems like we don’t know anything about these people running for office. We walk into a ballot room and we see two names and we either see a D or an R after their name and that’s what we check. We need to become more involved as a community. We need to build grassroots movements for leaders that actually care about the well being of our country and states. Or else, democracy as we know it will cease to exist.”

Tengwall is a member of the mock trial team. He traveled down to Madison nearly two weeks ago with the intention of leaving two days later. Instead, he's been staying in the capitol and vows he will not return to his regulary daily life until Walker's bill is killed.
