Differential tuition was at the forefront of this Monday’s regular Student Government Association meeting.
Assistant Dean of Students Tammy Fanning mentioned that Interim Chancellor Markwood is anxiously awaiting the Student Government report on the differential tuition.
President Duffy asked for reports from the senators on conversations with students about the differential tuition. Senator Borra was the first to speak, reporting that she had talked to three classes including both freshmen and upperclassmen. She reported that a figure between $200 and $350 seemed to be acceptable to most and that technology and the Jim Dan Hill Library were widely acceptable recipients of the funds.
Most underclassmen were skeptical about the benefits of Career Services, and had heard complaints from other students that the science department had some needs that could be addressed through the differential tuition, but were unclear on the details.
Senator Stenslund talked to graduate students about their priorities. They supported funding for Career Services and for the library. It was suggested that perhaps more money be devoted to on-line journals, and less to books.
Senator Dhital asked that both Career Services and the Library meet either formally or informally to explain what use is made of the differential tuition funding. President Duffy explained that the two entities had been asked for information, and that she would ask again.
Stensland was also concerned that the ad-hoc committee hadn't met yet, and that perhaps he could assist Senator Lindberg in scheduling meetings. Stenslund was designated co-chair of the ad-hoc committee, and the Senate body agreed to gather more information, and to be prepared to discuss the issue at Meet Your Government Night.
In other business, “Meet Your Government Night” plans were discussed at the Student Government Association meeting on Mon., Nov. 8. It will be held in the lobby of the Marcovitch Wellness Center from 8 to 10 p.m. There will be games and food, and all members of SGA will be there to talk to their constituents. It was requested that this event be highly publicized, to get as many students to attend as possible.
