The 6th annual Tony G. 3 on 3 tournament will be held April 17 and 18 in the Health & Wellness Center on the University Wisconsin Superiors Campus, to raise money for the Tony Gigliotti Scholarship Fund.
The tournament has seven different age groups and competition is separated by gender, as well as competitive and non-competitive groups. There will be championship t-shirts awarded to the winners.
Teams need to register by April 13. The cost is $40 per team with a guarantee to play three games up to 15 points. Admission for spectators is $1, or a non-perishable food item that will be donated to Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
With cooperation from area businesses, tournament spectators and players they are expanding their help to around the community. For every dollar donated to Second Harvest, they are able to turn that into $10, and able to feed thousands of Northlanders.
Last year over 80 teams participated and tournament coordinator Mark Johnson says they are looking forward to having even more this year.
“We as a group are excited for this year’s tournament. We know that the hard work and dedication to making this a strong community event will allow us to continue for many years to come,” said Johnson.
The Tony Gigliotti Scholarship Fund was created in January 2005 as a way to honor UWS student Tony Gigliotti. Tony was a legal studies major who died in an automobile accident.
The fund, started by his parents, annually provides a scholarship to a UWS junior or senior who is majoring in legal studies, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has demonstrated financial need. The funds collected from the initial year of the tournament raised enough money to keep the scholarship around as a permanent endowment at UWS.
