The tuition is too darn high

Posted 11/9/2010
by Simon Rousset

The calendar showed a deadline for students' minimum first payment due a week ago. As I was looking through my bill to pay the fee, I realized how tuition had increased since the spring semester 2010. And it has increased considerably. The thing is, I don't remember opening my e-mail and being notified of this increase, or even being asked about my opinion on the subject. The raise is so important that it might jeopardize my college career. The university takes on these multi-million projects of a new RSC, a "link" between Ross and Hawkes Hall, or even a parking lot in order to attract new students, as if the university was seeking prospects to buy the product of UWS. But, the most important part of a business is to retain the already consumers of the university, the upperclassmen, undergraduates and graduates. How is it possible to do so if our voices aren't being heard? The money spent should go toward a better education, by developing more study abroad programs, by increasing scholarship fundings, or by encouraging student organizations to develop. The way I see it, tuition will not stop going up if students do not react now. Dear Stinger, tell us how expensive was tuition 5 years ago? how about 10-20 years ago? Students sometimes complain about the amount of work they put in just to be able to pay for tuition. Don't you think they should worry more about graduating, or getting involved, or even about their future career?
Something should be done. Now.

PS : Pardon my business language, but it has been brought to my attention that we should talk about UWS as a brandname, not as an educational institution. However, this might be considered a topic for another letter.
