The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Take a Student to Lunch Program once again kicked off at the beginning of September, but this year there were some changes.

Due to state budget cuts, UWS joined forces with the Superior-Douglas County Chamber of Commerce to provide more than 250 meals to students and faculty, which were donated by local businesses. In previous years, the lunches were provided through the University’s dining services on campus.

“The new approach is actually better,” said Provost Christopher Markwood. “We are engaging the community.” Markwood established the Take a Student to Lunch program after coming from another university a few years ago.

The program runs throughout September and is aimed at introducing new students to the community and making them feel at home, as well as allowing faculty and staff to get to know their students and learn more about their needs and goals.

Tracey Gibbens, the low brass instructor in UWS’ Music Department, has taken advantage of the program over the years and says he really enjoyed the experience.

“You never have the opportunity to learn about students in the classroom,” he mentioned. “This way, you can be in a relaxed setting with no formal relationship.”

Senior Joe Scaffidi agrees with Gibbens. “I’ve had multiple experiences with the Take a Student to Lunch program, and they were all good,” he said. He highly suggests that both faculty and students make the most of this opportunity. “You get to know your instructors on a personal level…it helps break down that formal barrier,” he said.

Hopefully, participation will grow even larger next year.

“We are thrilled that the Chamber of Commerce stepped up to welcome the students,” concluded Markwood. “We couldn’t be happier.”
