Amnesty International invited students to sign banners entitled “Healthcare is a Human Right” Tuesday in the RSC concourse.

The two posters will be sent to Congressmen Jim Oberstar and David Obey of Minnesota and Wisconsin, respectively.

“Posters are a little more visual. Obviously an envelope coming large enough to fit a poster is going to be a little more noticeable than an handful of average sized document letters,” said Amnesty International member Janice Matthews.

Amnesty group members set a goal of 50 signatures for each poster. Matthews says it’s important that students make their voices heard.

“We feel that this is a universal human right and it’s about time we have it for our citizens. We want to show that UWS cares,” said Matthews.

The group plans to send the posters to the local offices of the Congressmen along with letters stating that no matter what healthcare plan Congress decides on, healthcare is a right and not a commodity.

“I hope they recognize that this is an issue, that we care and this is a human right. I hope that at the end of the day that’ll affect their decision making. Obviously they can’t change the world or the law overnight, but enough people making a statement can add up to something,” said Matthews.
