On a gloomy Wednesday at the UWS campus, students were bussed off in search of a bright future at the Head of the Lakes Job Fair. Fifty-eight employers packed into the UMD Kirby Student Center Ballroom in search of future interns, fellowship students, volunteers and employees.

UWS Career Services offered students free transportation to the event, which ran from 10 AM to 2 PM.  The coach bus made four round trips through the rain and snow that plagued the northland yesterday.

Grad student Jill Fredrickson said she was attending the fair for both personal and educational reasons.  “I’m fulfilling practicum requirements for an Art Therapy class by attending but I’m also interested to see what opportunities are out there,” she said.   Fredrickson hopes to find an appealing offer, even if she has to leave the area. “I attended a job fair in Minneapolis during my undergrad studies and I found that there are a lot of openings out there if I’m willing to travel.”

Hundreds of students clad in business professional attire signed in and were given name tags before entering. They were also given a guide as to where employers were stationed.

Employers ranged from the Social Security Administration to Mary Kay Cosmetics. Students were able to search the employers before the fair from the Career Services website. Employers were broken down as to what positions were being offered, what majors pertain to the positions, and brief descriptions of the organizations.

Career Services also offered students on-campus recruiting today. Students were asked to sign up in advance to apply. CN railroad and ALLETE offered internships, while the Peace Corps is in search of a volunteer.
