On Friday night, the city of Superior, the University of
Wisconsin-Superior campus and surrounding communities will rally together in
the second annual Speak Out Superior in support of those who have been victims
of domestic and sexual violence.
At 4 p.m., all who want to participate in the hour-long march will gather at the Ole Haugsrud stadium complex on the corner of Belknap and Mortorelli Drive. From there the UW-Superior Gender Equity Program will lead participants, with a police escort, to the Superior City Court House where a program will take place along with food served.
The rally will start at 5 p.m. inside the court house with live music from a Native American woman’s group, local speakers from on and off campus and victims and family and friends of victims will be invited to the microphone to speak. Erika Leif from Center Against Sexual & Domestic Violence (CASDA) will be the emcee.
“We want to reach out to victims to help heal with this march and rally…to know that you are not alone, to freshman in the halls to a 45 year old woman coming back to school,” said Krisi Patterson, UW-Superior’s Director of Campus Recreation, who is one of the four people helping put together this event.
It is not only the UW-Superior campus they are reaching out to, but they are reaching out to men, women and anyone in the surrounding area who has been affected by any sort of physical, mental, emotional domestic abuse and sexual violence.
This event also is a way to let past victims or current victims know there is help available out there said Patterson. There will be CASDA advocates available at the event for anyone who needs additional resources or help. The event is free and open to the public.
