After hundreds turned out to the steps of Old Main on Thursday to speak out against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget repair bill, it was time for more than 100 University of Wisconsin-Superior students to make their voices heard.

Friday afternoon’s rally started at the Yellowjacket Union on the UW-Superior campus. Students then walked to the Douglas County Court House where they gathered to show their support to stop Governor Walker’s bill from passing. Many students held signs, wore stickers and waved hands and pom-poms in a rally to support Wisconsin’s state workers.

Many students chanted, “Kill the bill, kill the bill,” and “This is what democracy looks like,” as they walked down Belknap Street. Passing motorists honked their horns in support of the students, who were joined by a few staff and faculty members.

At the courthouse, students took turns sharing their thoughts on Walker’s proposed bill, which would cut collective bargaining rights for state worker unions. One student got up to say her grandfather fought for union rights, and that people can’t have let him fight for nothing. Another student shouted, “We have to act now.”

Many students agreed there is a need for people to fight Walker’s proposed budget repair bill, and that if this it goes through it will affect everyone.
