This Thursday the University Theater will open Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” at the Manion Theater in the Holden Fine Arts building.
“The Odd Couple” centers on Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar, two mismatched roommate divorcees trying to make their way through life together.
“It is the story of two men who are complete opposites,” said Jason McDowell, who plays Oscar. “They end up living together and can’t stand each other.”
The original play written by Simon was the basis for the 1970s film and spin-offs.
“Essentially the play is word-for-word, the movie just jumps around a lot,” explained McDowell. “[The audience] should expect to laugh a lot.”
Jacob Randall, who plays Vinnie explains that rehearsals for the show have gone well.
“This is my first show and it has been an experience," he said. "I can’t believe how far we’ve come.”
Randall says that his character is part of the catalyst that moves the story toward its conflict, “My character tries to keep the peace, but he’s really annoying. He doesn’t think before he speaks.”
Yet Randall explains that aundience members have nothing to fear with the play getting too serious, “We have two female characters that are the comic relief. They are really funny and add volume to the show.”
“The Odd Couple” will run April 21, 22, 23, 29, 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Manion Theater in the Holden Fine Arts Center. A Matinee will be held May 1 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and $2 for UW-Superior students with their student I.D.
