SGA President Borra issues SOS: Save Our School

posted 12/01/2011
by Emily Borra

Student Government Association president Emily Borra issued this plea on Wednesday asking students to aid in conserving money for the campus and detailing ways to achieve this goal. See below:

We have entered a time where we need to be financially responsible, not only to have more money in our pocketbooks, but to help save money for our campus. Utility costs tend to be very high on any campus. By being responsible about our utility costs, we can help save money for UW-Superior. Below is a list formulated by the SGA Executive Cabinet on how to save money for our campus.

Student Sustainability Solutions

Save a watt

  • Unplug appliances when not in use (example: in student lounges, residence halls, etc.
  • Coffee pots, microwaves, chargers, etc.
  • Shut off power strips when not in use.
  • Put your computer on sleep or standby mode or turn it off.
  • Only do laundry when you have a full load.

Last one out, turn it out
  • Turn off the lights when you’re the last one out of the room.
  • Turn off TV’s in the YU when you’re the last one watching.

Bee more active
  • Take the stairs.
  • Only use the handicapped doors if you need it.
  • Keep outside doors closed and not propped open.

Room Pool
  • Go to class; skipping only costs you money.
  • 20 people in one room, compared to 1 person, costs less per person.

Shop Campus
  • Buy books and supplies from Jacket Book and Supply.
  • Hungry? Eat at the Brick Over Grill or Café.
  • Thirsty? Grab some coffee from Jacket Java.

These are just a few money saving ideas on how we can help “Save our School” because of the budget lapse. More ideas are always encouraged.

Is sustainability something you’re interested in? United Council is hosting a Sustainability Conference February 24-26. If you would like information on attending, please feel free to contact me.
