Pet projects are starting to pan out in the Student Government Association.

At Monday night's meeting, Sen. Graham Garfield announced that he will be the University of Wisconsin – Superior student representative on the Douglas County Board. The position was offered to him at Superior Days by the Chair, Douglas Finn. He will be working on coordinating joint county – student body projects. The Freshman Health and Human Performance class will be putting on a “Health-O-Rama” on Thursday at the Markowich Health and Wellness Center from 11 – 3, focusing on the health risks of obesity. There will also be a “Science Night,” put on by Anatomy and Physiology students on diseases, April 8th at Wessman Arena. The position is not associated with his role in student government.

Sen. Jake Lindberg is finalizing details on a forum to discuss on–campus smoking policy. Questions to be considered are, should the policy stay the same? Should there be one centralized smoking area? Should smoking be banned on campus altogether? Ray Reinertson, senior lecturer for Health and Human Performance will be arguing for a total ban. The forum will be held in the Kathryn Ohman Theater in McCaskill Hall.

Saroj Dhital, Director of SUFAC, presented the segregated fee rates. Funding for Athletics will be going up a little over $8 to $170.78, to help defray overall costs including travel, uniforms, and equipment. The Athletic Department receives funding from several sources, including state funding, alumni donations, fund raisers, ticket sales  and the segregated fee collected from students. State funding, however, has been frozen for the last four years. Because the students pay this fee, their admission to all games is free. The fee for the Department of Student Involvement will increase to $10.55, because they will be funding alternative spring break activities.

Meet Your Government Night is scheduled for Monday, April 4th in the Shippar Atrium of the Yellowjacket Union. It will be a chance to meet the three new senators: Ian Schoenike, representing Business, Economics, and TED; David Jensen, for Communicating Arts; and Jess Burns, senator at large.

Election packs will be available both at the information desk in the Student Union and on line, for those wanting to be part of SGA. Your application will be due on March 30th. The election will be on April 5th.
