In a weekend where we saw the U.S.A. upset its bitter rival Canada in the Olympics, the University of Wisconsin - Superior couldn’t do the same against their bitter rival in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association tournament.

Although they may have played their best hockey of the season, they ended with a 4-4 tie on Friday night and a 3-3 tie on Saturday night, and ended up losing the mini game 1-0, sending the St. Scholastica into the next round.

On Friday night, CSS got on the board first, scoring a power play goal at the 10:42 mark of the first period.  UWS would come back and answer less than a minute later on a goal by freshman Josh Kesler.  Saint Scholastica, however, would score with just 42 seconds remaining in the period and would go into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

The Saints would then score 7 minutes into the second period, taking a 3-1 lead.  UWS came back once again, and ended up scoring three straight goals, one in the second (Chris Wilson) period and two in the third (Josh Kesler, Justin Farnya) to take a 4-3 lead.  Just seconds after the ‘Jackets took that 4-3 lead, CSS scored to tie the game at 4.  Neither team would score in the overtime session, and the game would end with a score of 4-4.

Kesler led the ‘Jackets with two goals and an assist, while freshman Justin Farnya added a goal and an assist.

Saturday night would be more of the same, a hard fought rivalry battle.  UWS would light the lamp first in this game, however, on a goal by senior Tyler Fletcher at the 16:33 mark of the 1st period.

CSS answered less than a minute later, and both teams would go into the locker room with a 1-1 tie after the first period.

UWS struck early in the second period on a shorthanded goal by junior Talon Berlando, but was, again, answered a minute later by the Saints.  Berlando would score his second goal of the game later in the period, and UWS would take a 3-2 lead into the third period.

Neither team would score in the third period until the 18:54 mark when CSS would tie the game after putting an extra skater on the ice.  The game would go into overtime, but neither team would score, sending the series into a mini game.  CSS would score first in the mini game, and win the series, ending the ‘Jacket’s season.

In game two, the ‘Jackets were lead by their two top scorers, Berlando (2 G) and Chris Wilson (2 A).

Sophomore goaltender Bryan Dalbec played solid net in both games, giving UWS a shot to upset CSS.  In game one, he stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced, while turning away 25 shots in game two.

UWS will look to rebound next season, but will do so without 7 seniors who have been fixtures on the ice for UWS the last four years.  These players include captains Brian Bina and Tyler Fletcher, 2009 All-American Braden Desmet, defensemen Josh Seifert and Art Clark, this year’s leading scorer Chris Wilson, and goaltender Mike Rosett.
