Now that the University of Wisconsin-Superior garnered $17,000 from the seller’s auction of the new student center, the wrecking ball looms over the fifty year old building.

Last month’s auction advertised “Everything must go” and it did. Four hours after the bidding began, there was nothing left to sell says UW-Superior Facilities Engineer Ken Raihala.

“The biggest items and the ones that went very well were the two walk-in coolers. They disassembled them and took them out of there in just a couple hours. They were really anxious to get them. There were some stainless tables that went,” Raihala said.

UWS expected to hold another auction to rid the building of unwanted items from the first, but Raihala says that won’t be necessary. He estimates that over 160 people showed up for the auction.

“There were an awful lot of sets of chairs and tables that were in the snack bar; those went. I mean just everything; furniture went. There was one man at the very end of the auction that bought everything that remained,” he said.

Raihala says the next step is demolition of the Rothwell Student Center.

“What’s going to happen is the asbestos abatement is going to end in another week and then they’re going in they’re going to take off whatever can be recycled and then after that, the ball’s going to come. So pretty soon, the fence went up around it already. They’ve got the perimeter pretty much surrounded with gates and I think they’re talking about starting demolition in the bookstore area and pulling everything towards Catlin Avenue,” he said.

Yellowjacket Union Director Gail Archambault says the money raised has already been deposited in the Yellowjacket Union reserve fund. This fund is used for furniture, equipment and supplies in the new student center.
