More than 20 UW-Superior staff and students gathered Friday at 9:11 a.m. outside of Old Main to take a moment of silence for victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks eight years ago.

The UWS College Republicans and Student Government raised money to place 1,500 miniature American flags in the lawn outside of Old Main for those who lost their lives in the attacks.

Andrew Amys of the UWS College Republicans says today is for more than just remembering the victims.

“After the attacks, everyone had a sense of patriotism that we’ve kind of forgotten about with all of our bi-partisan bickering,” said Amys, “we wanted everybody to be able to go back to being a patriot again.”

Dean of Students Vicki Hajewski hopes that students can reflect on this day and learn a few things from the attacks.

“I hope that people can learn that violence is not always the answer,” said Hajewski.

She says that this motto fits well into UWS’s liberal education.

“That’s what education is all about- how to debate in a civil manner without wanting to blow each other up. There’s nothing better to bring about peace than education and having people figure out better ways to interact,” said Hajewski.

The flags will be on display for the remainder of the day and into Saturday.
