The snow, sleet and rain weren’t enough to stop the sixth annual Blizzard Open track and field meet from taking place in the University of Wisconsin - Superior Lydia Thering Fieldhouse on Jan. 23.
UWS hosted over two hundred collegiate and unattached athletes, with representatives from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Bemidji State University, the College of St. Scholastica and Lakehead University.
Blizzard Open and Lydia Thering Fieldhouse records were broken, including the meet record for the men’s long jump which was broken by UWS jumper Randy Khieu at 6.79 meters.
The other meet record that was broken was the women’s 800 meter run. Kristi Buerkle of Bemidji State University ran the event in 2:19.11.
Three Fieldhouse records were also broken: the women’s 60 meter dash broken by Buerkle of Bemidji State (8.04), the women’s 200 meter hurdles broken by Jennifer Plaetz of St. Scholastica (33.031), and the men’s 60 meter hurdles broken by John Knebel of UMD (8.35).
Out of nearly 40 events Bemidji State claimed six first place finishes, St. Scholastica took eight, Lakehead University had six, UWS had one, and two unattached athletes had one a piece. UMD was the big winner of the meet with 14 first place finishes.
