In a surprising victory through a  write-in campaign, Eggie Chang and Emily Borra have been nominated for the role of student body president and vice president for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Looking toward next year, Chang expresses concerns about the role of SUFAC director that will now be vacant.

“There are a few positions I am anxious to fill, such as SUFAC director, because Saroj Dhital is graduating, and it is such a controversial position," Chang said. "Someone who will literally be in charge of a huge budget for about 30 student orgs.”

The SUFAC director position would have been filled by Chang had she not been elected for president.

“We are hoping to find a really good candidate,” she said. “It looks really good on a resume and gives you a lot of experience.”

A year ago Chang would have never known that she would campaign for presidency. Her and Borra met while working as SUFAC committee members and got along very well.

“It was surprising we got along so well especially on Sufac where there is a lot of controversy,” Chang said. “We had talked about running for the presidency and when we realized we had missed the deadline, we just did it.”

Chang and Borra campaigned massively by using signs, chalking, mailbox stuffers and making flyers to hang around campus.

“The night before the election Emily, myself and two others got together and made about 80 to 100 signs and put them up around campus after 10 o’clock to surprise people when they got up the next morning.”

The team also relied on a word-of-mouth campaign. They also passed out candies, used a lot of sidewalk chalk at every entrance and made sure to put as much signs and writing outside the no campaign zone.

“We literally wrote just under the No Campaign line on the entrances of the YU,” Chang said.

The total time spent campaigning was at least 40 hours from Sunday through Wednesday.

“I got a maximum 3 hours of sleep each night for that week,” Chang said.

Their plans for next year include getting more things announced to the student body and increasing student involvement.

“Our four top goals and partnering and working with the chamber to get more discounts for students," Chang said. "We currently have a little more than a handful because there is a lot to do in Superior.”

Chang and Borra also hope to shed a spotlight on the diverse population of students on campus.

“To increase diversity evnts, there is a diversity fair initiated last year underway which would sort of be like a student involvement fair," Chang said.

Another goal of the two is to get students involved in student government.

“To increase student involvement and input making sure things get out on time, tabling in other buildings not just the YU but like in the MWC, and Holden.”

Chang says she is also looking forward to working with the newly elected chancellor, Dr. Renee Wachter.

“Finally, to work with Dr. Wachter, with her to make her involved with students and campus life.” Chang is looking forward to next year, “I am proud of Emily Borra and I, we weren’t expecting that this would happen. It’s really exciting and we are really glad that we have good friends to help us out with the campaign.”
