Connie Urmanski is this week’s Stinger Player of the Week. Urmanski is a freshmen guard on the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjacket women’s basketball team. She is originally from Edgar, Wisc. where she previously played basketball for Edgar High School.
“I'm very grateful for the recognition of having received the award, quite surprised actually,” Urmanski said. “There are many talented athletes here at UWS, so to be chosen out of the group is a privilege.”
Urmanski is one of two freshmen on a squad that is mostly made up of sophomores and juniors, yet she has started all seven games so far this season for the ‘Jackets. She also has scored in double digits in five of the seven games and she has been the team’s leading scorer in three of the games. Her highest point total in a game so far is 26 and her average is 14.4 points per games.
“I've been playing organized basketball since third or fourth grade but have been around it my whole life. I have two older sisters who both played and my mom was very involved with the program, so I've been around basketball my whole life,” said Urmanski. “I took a love for the game from day one and am still playing because of that to this day.”
The athlete chose to attend UW-Superior because she is an elementary education major and believes that the University has a great education program.
“Basketball was obviously another reason,” she added. “When I visited, the girls were all very welcoming and they got along on and off the court. As a freshman, I needed somewhere that was going to be very welcoming and home-like and Superior offered just that.”
