The Rothwell Student Center’s Skylounge was packed with close to 70 crazed UWS students who were dressed in either purple or green for the Vikings vs. Packers Monday Night football game.
Students wore jerseys of their teams, outrageous hats and even helmets. One could have mistaken the viewing of the regular season game for the Super Bowl as fans of both teams were yelling and screaming even before kickoff.
The long standing Minnesota-Wisconsin rivalry was stoked in the off-season with Hall of Famer Brett Favre coming back and putting on the colors of his old team’s (Packers) bitter arch enemy, and that is exactly why this campus event was planned.
The event was put on by Joe Mukite and the Yellowjacket Activities Crew (YAC). Not only was there a big screen TV with loud speakers, there was also free popcorn and prizes given out at halftime and at the end of the game. The prizes were given to those who picked the right numbers in a scoring grid. Some of the students who came, including Mukite, aren’t even Viking or Packer fans.
“I am a [Chicago] Bears fan, so this game could go either way for all I care,” said Mukite. “I would like to see the Packers win though. It would be cool to see Favre get his butt kicked,” he added.
This was YAC’s second event put on of the year, with the first being the men’s soccer home opener.
“This is my second event of the year, and it’s a huge success. This is way more people than I thought would be here,” said Mukite.
Many of the fans were having a great time at the event, judging by their yelling and screaming.
“I think it is really cool that they put this on,” said UWS student Ryan Wolfram.
Wolfram is from Washburn, Wisconsin, but is neither a Viking nor Packer fan. He is a die-hard Cowboys fan who sported a Vikings sweatshirt.
“I am having a great time tonight and I hope it’s a good game,” he said.
It ended up being a great game for Viking fans and not so great for Packer fans, with a 30-23 victory by Minnesota.
