University of Wisconsin - Superior students will be ditching their sweatpants and t-shirts for business suits.

College students will learn a few etiquette and interview tips at the No Gigs for Pigs etiquette dinner on Wednesday, November 11 with the help of UWS Career services and regional businesses. Career Services Specialist Betsy Gregg says some students can learn a thing or two.

“There are those horror stories where people have too much wine or that kind of thing, and it’s really important that students stay professional even while dining. Dining is not a party, but people should still be able to enjoy it and with these rules they don’t have to stress about it because they know they’re doing the right thing,” said Gregg.

Nicole Johnson from the human resources department at ALLETE of Duluth will be on hand to teach students about the job interview process. She says the way students act can make or break an interview.

“When employers have a short period of time trying to compare people to find out what would be for the organization, I think that since the candidates are not adequately prepared whether it be dress, communication style, timeliness, not using what they know about the company or doing research on the company, those are all things that certainly can lead to a negative outcome when applying for a job,” said Johnson.

Johnson says this is a chance for students to gain a competitive edge against other job seekers.

“If nobody tells them what people are expecting, why would they think anything different? So this is an opportunity to find out what an employer is expecting so they can be prepared for when they go into that job market,” said Johnson.

The dinner and show is free for students. Those who want to attend should RSVP by Friday, November 6 by calling UWS Career Services at 394-8024.
