New exhibit features work of art therapist

The new show in the third floor gallery of Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center is an exploration of the world of art therapy by artist Stephany Anderson.

Stephany transferred from University of Minnesota Duluth, where she had been studying fine arts. She found that she didn't want to be a competitive artist. She transferred here, wanting to complete a bachelor's degree, but not necessarily in fine arts.  An intake counselor suggested she try art therapy. She found her place, and is currently pursuing her post-graduate degree.

“Art therapy is a growing field because it can be used with any population and for a myriad of reasons," Anderson said. "It aids cognitive skills, helps people deal with difficult emotional issues and offers an alternative method of coping.” She feels that art therapy is very necessary in today's world.

Her goal in the exhibit is to demystify the process of art therapy. Some of the show is an interactive art therapy experience, and Anderson hopes that people will feel free to participate. There are also written explanations for some of the pieces.

During her internship she worked with a wide variety of people, from very young to very old.

“Through this process I was able to witness the healing effects of art and at the same time learn more about myself,” she said.

Anderson also works in the costume department here on campus. She started five years ago in a work-study position, and this year became the manager.

“I love it, it is the only job I have ever had that I can lose track of time,” she said.

Anderson's show opening is Sat., March 19.
