Nancy Garcia visited UW-Superior from Oaxaca, Mexico on Friday to tell students and staff about the migration of people through Mexico, and the trials that they go through.

Garcia told stories of several different people and the difficulties they faced as they left their homes for many different reasons. “There are three [main] reasons that people decide to leave their homes," she said. "Many leave because of economic reasons and lack of jobs and money.” Later on she also said that many families flee El Salvador out of fear of gangs.

"They don’t want their children to be killed by the gangs or to become part of these gangs,” Garcia said.

The people that face these journeys face many other problems, including theft, kidnapping and other terrible crimes. After talking about these things she ended by explaining to the audience the reasons why she is traveling and spreading these messages. “My main motivation to be here is to build together and improve the situation," Garcia said. "Countries build walls to keep people out, but the biggest wall that we can tear down is the one in our hearts.”

This event was sponsored by  the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Department of Social Inquiry, the International Peace Studies Student Association, and the Social Work Program.
