The University of Wisconsin-Superior theatre performed their opening show of Morning’s at Seven on April 15th in the Manion Theater.
Before the play the cast gathered in the Green room to relax before the opening show. Director Julie Ahasay, a UW-Superior alumna and veteran of University Theatre productions, was discussing the unique aspects this play brings to the university.
Morning’s at Seven is a play by Paul Osborn and was first performed in 1939 as a Broadway production.
“Many people can identify themselves with the play because it’s very real in a sense that many people still have family members that live at home,” said Ahasay.
She said the hardest thing to accomplish when preparing to direct a play is choosing the right cast and that she just has to go with her instincts.
The cast consists of university alumni, Kathy Laakso, Scott Smith and Jack Starr along with community members Keith Shelbourn, Cathy Berggren, Patricia Lewis, Lawrence Bernado and Priscilla Manisto. Meghan O’Toole-Gott is a current UW-Superior student who plays the main character Myrtle Brown.
The cast was well dressed to fit the part of 1930’s country folks who explore the value, and annoyance, of family. The play focuses on three sisters growing up in a small midwestern town in 1938. Their lives are thrown for a loop when the character Myrtle Brown arranges a marriage proposal for one of the sisters.
Performances of "Morning's at Seven" are in the Manion Theater and begin at 7:30 p.m. 23 and 24. The April 25 performance is a 1 p.m. matinee.
