The Department of Business and Economics held its 40th annual banquet on Friday night, April 30, in the Great Room of the Yellowjacket Union at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Over 120 people came to see scholarships and awards given out to DBE students, as well as enjoy a chicken dinner.
The banquet returned to UWS after some time away from campus on Barkers Island, noted Dr. Robert Beam of the economics department.
“The banquet has been held at Barkers Island many of the last ten or twelve years; sometimes we bring it back here to campus just to mix it up,” he said before the awards ceremony began.
Dr. Beam stressed the importance of the banquet to the students who had earned the recognition they were receiving on Friday night.
“A banquet like this should be recognized for what it does for the students and this campus…It makes the students feel special, and it shows how much we appreciate their contributions…and it’s important to see how important they are to this campus,” Dr. Beam said. “This is our way of really celebrating our students.”
Senior Elizabeth Dalzen echoed these sentiments.
“It’s even more of an honor to not just be honored on a piece of paper, but in front of peers, instructors, and parents,” she said.
One of the highlights of the evening was a new scholarship funded by Minnesota Power, which was given to Teagan Cassen. The company made a $250,000 grant to the University to fund the scholarships. The check was presented by former ALLETE (Minnesota Power’s parent company) CEO Don Shippar, whose retirement from the company had become official the same day as the DBE banquet.
As the cherry on top of the banquet, Dr. Beam also sang a song known as “Econ Blues” he had written along with performing it on his guitar, delighting a crowd that had already been delighted all evening long, as well as performing the UWS fight song after all scholarships were handed out to more rave reviews from the audience.
