After getting swept a week ago against University of Wisconsin - Stout at home, the Yellowjacket men’s hockey team ran into another tough opponent last weekend in St. Norbert’s College, and didn’t fare well. UWS was beat in both games, 5-2 on Friday night and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, UWS got off to a slow start and went into the third period down 3-0. Two quick power play goals by freshman Derek Stauber (Duluth, MN) and senior Chris Wilson (Prince Albert, SK) brought the ‘Jackets to a 3-2 deficit. They just couldn’t get anything else going in the period, with St. Norbert’s adding another goal late in the period, followed by an empty netter to seal the 5-2 victory. UWS seemed to be outmatched in the game, getting outshot 44-16 in the game.
Sophomore goaltender Bryan Dalbec (Superior, WI) played a good game in net despite getting peppered with those 44 shots. He allowed 4 goals on the game, but on the positive side, he had 40 saves against a great St. Norbert’s team.
Three players recorded all of the scoring in the game for the ‘Jackets. Wilson and Stauber had a goal and an assist each, while junior Talon Berlando (Drumheller, AB) added two helpers.
UWS got out to another slow start in game two, going into the first intermission with a 2-0 deficit. 21 seconds into the second period, however, Berlando lit the lamp to make it 2-1. After that, the second period became a scoring frenzy, with St. Norbert’s scoring three times in the period, and Berlando adding another goal to go into the third period down 5-2. The third period wouldn’t bring much luck, with St. Norbert’s making it 6-2 eight minutes into the third. A couple minutes later, senior Logan Isley (Bonnyville, AB) scored for the ‘Jackets to make it 6-3, and that is exactly how it would end. UWS was again outshot by a large margin in the game, 38-18.
Senior net minder Mike Rosett (Anchorage, AK) started the game in net and recorded the loss, but was pulled in the second period after giving up 4 goals in just 25 shots faced. Junior Peter O’Hara (Burnsville, MN) would replace Rosett and wouldn’t fare much better, giving up two goals in the Knight’s final 13 shots.
In addition to Berlando’s two goals, the Yellowjackets had two other players with two points; Isley had a goal and an assist, while Wilson added two helpers.
UWS continues to get good production from their two leading scorers in Wilson and Berlando. Wilson continued is great play in these two games, having a four-point weekend (1 G, 3 A). He now has 28 points on the season, which is second in the NCHA, with 12 goals and 16 assists. Berlando also played well on the weekend scoring four points of his own with two goals and two assists, which brings his season total to 19 points (10 G, 9 A).
These losses bring the ‘Jackets’ under .500, with a record of 8-9-2 overall and 2-9-1 in NCHA play. They will look to get back on track and end a five game winless streak as they travel to UW-Stout on Friday night and UW-River Falls on Saturday.
