The UW-Superior men’s hockey team played to a 2-2 tie and a 3-0 win this weekend against conference opponent UW-Eau Claire, splitting the home series.
Game one was a hard fought battle from the start, with the ‘Jackets striking first early in the first period on a power play goal by senior Chris Wilson. After being tied after the first horn sounded, senior Art Clark delivered a goal two minutes into the second period, making the score 2-1.
UWS goaltender Jim Patterson, who has been hot in net for the ‘Jackets, controlled the rest of the game until Clark was called for a tripping penalty late in the third period. The Bluegolds took advantage, scoring with 2:25 left in the game to tie it up.
Neither team was able to muster up a goal in the overtime session, and finished in a 2-2 tie.
Patterson played another solid game in net, turning away 22 Bluegold shots. Wilson led the ‘Jackets with a goal and an assist, and Logan Isley and Derek Stauber added an assist each.
Game two was all UWS and netminder Garrett Tinkham. Tinkham, making his career start in net for the ‘Jackets, stopped all 22 shots he faced and earned his first UWS win and shutout.
With goaltending not a problem in this one, Wilson added two more goals in game two to lead UWS to a 3-0 win. Isley scored a goal as well, and senior Braden Desmet added two assists.
The split against the Bluegolds brings the ‘Jackets’ season record to 4-2-1 overall, and 1-2-1 in NCHA play.
They look to continue to improve as they play host to Marian College on Friday night before they travel to St. Paul, MN to take on St. Thomas University on Saturday night.
