The University of Wisconsin- Superior men’s hockey team extended its winless streak to seven games this weekend, as they traveled to UW-Stout on Friday night and UW-River Falls on Saturday afternoon. Although they played tough in the two close games, they came out of Menomonie (UW-Stout) with a 3-3 tie and River Falls with a 3-2 loss.
Friday night against the Blue Devils was a back and forth game, with Stout lighting the lamp first with three minutes to go in the first period. They held that lead until 12 minutes and 49 seconds into the second period when junior Talon Berlando tied the game at 1-1 for the ‘Jackets. The tie didn’t last long, however, as Stout scored just 13 seconds later and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
UWS struck quick in the third period when freshman Kyle Leahy hooked up senior Tyler Fletcher for his ninth goal of the year and a 2-2 tie. After the Blue Devils scored 10 minutes later to take a 3-2 lead, Yellowjacket freshman Thomas Erlacher tied the game at three with just a minute and a half to go in the game. Both teams came up empty in the overtime session, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Sophomore goaltender Bryan Dalbec played a solid 65 minutes in net against an always tough UW-Stout team. He turned away 37 of the 40 shots he faced, including four saves in overtime.
Saturday’s game in River Falls was another tough battle.
UWS struck first on junior Jameson Lundquist’s first goal of the season. The Falcons went on to score three unanswered goals and took a 3-1 lead with just three minutes to go in the game. Just over a minute later, Jesse Junkermeier potted a short handed goal at the 18:18 mark of the third period, but that was all the ‘Jackets mustered up and lost the game 3-2.
Dalbec started the game in net again, and had another good performance, stopping 24 of the 27 shots he faced. He has faced a lot of shots in his last three starts, and has been keeping the Yellowjackets in these games.
UWS didn’t get much production from their two leading scorers this weekend. Berlando scored one goal, but senior Chris Wilson was held scoreless in both games, after he had recorded a point in all six games in 2010.
This brings the ‘Jacket’s record to 8-10-3 overall and 2-10-2 in NCHA play. UWS will play at home this weekend after a four game road streak, and take on UW-Stevens Point and St. Norbert’s College at Wessman Arena. Saturday’s game (Feb. 6th) against St. Norbert’s is the “Pink the Rink” game in which UWS will wear pink jerseys and help raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.
