The University of Wisconsin - Superior men’s hockey team continued their hot streak this weekend, beating both Marian College 5-3 and St. Thomas University 3-2 in a couple of non-conference match ups.

On Friday night, Marian got an early lead, scoring two minutes into the game. UWS countered later in the period on a goal by Kyle Leahy (Fort St. John, BC), tying the game at one going into the first intermission.

Junior Jesse Junkermeier (Minnetonka, MN) scored the lone goal in the second period, giving the ‘Jackets a 2-1 lead.

Scoring in the third period was started off by the Sabres, getting a goal 7 minutes into the period to tie the game at two. After Freshman Justin Farnya (Calgary, AB) gave the ‘Jackets a 3-2 lead later in the period, Marian countered less than a minute later to tie the game again. Then, at the 17:18 mark, Farnya scored his second goal and gave the ‘Jackets the lead for good. Junior Talon Berlando (Drumheller, AB) would add an empty netter with two seconds left to make the final score 5-3.

Freshman goaltender Garrett Tinkham (Paradise, TX) won his second straight game playing solid in net, turning away 30 Sabres’ shots. Four Yellowjackets had two or more points in the game, including Junkermeier (G, A), Farnya (2 G), and Seniors Logan Isley (3 A) and Chris Wilson (2 A).

On Saturday night, UWS got off to a slow start allowing the Tommies to score first, but senior Braden Desmet (Strathmore, AB) tied the game at one before the first horn sounded.

St. Thomas would come away with the only goal in the second period, and came out for the third with a 2-1 lead.

That lead wouldn’t last long, as senior Chris Wilson (Prince Albert, SK) scored a shorthanded goal for the Yellowjackets three minutes into the third period, tying the game at two. Two minutes later, Wilson set up freshman Kyle Clement (Flower Mound, TX) for the game-winning goal.

This lead was more than enough for Tinkham, as he stopped 24 shots and earned his third consecutive victory as the ‘Jackets came out on top 3-2

Wilson, who has been on a hot streak, led UWS in this one with a goal and two helpers, and had a 5-point weekend for the ‘Jackets. He has 9 points in his last 4 games, with 4 goals and 5 assists.

These two victories bring UWS’s record to 6-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in NCHA play. They have won 5 of their last 6 games and look to continue their hot streak this weekend (Dec. 4and 5) as they travel to UW-Stevens Point to take on the struggling Pointers.
