The men and women's soccer teams played hard and collected winter caps for cancer patients on Wednesday at Caps for Cancer.

Both pink-garbed teams faced off against Finlandia University on Wednesday, and both walked away with winning scores of 8-0. However, winning wasn't the only feel-good of the night.

The winter caps that were collected will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Research Center to be given to cancer patients who have lost their hair from going through treatment. The caps will be worn by people throughout the Twin Ports, Ashland, and other areas.

That's not all, though.

Both coaches as well as members of the women's soccer team will be donating their hair to "Locks of Love" in support of cancer patients. For every 25 caps collected, a member of the men's team will shave his head. If the number of hats received reaches 150, men's head coach Joe Mooney will also shave his head. The haircuts will be open to the public when they take place on Thursday, October 6 at noon in the Yellowjacket Union.

"As of now I'm sitting at 143. I’m going to continue to collect [hats] until we hand them over at the head shaving ceremony next Thursday, but my official count will be on Monday," said Athletic Marketing and Fundraising Specialist Jon Garver on Thursday. "I’m extremely confident that Coach Mooney will be having his head shaved.  Even his wife wants to see it happen, as she donated 14 caps herself."

Mooney, on the other hand, is a little apprehensive.

"To be honest, I'm a little nervous about the head-shaving," he admitted. "But I’m more proud to be a part of this event.  I'm really proud of my student-athletes for stepping up and recognizing this as an opportunity to help.  I'm also very proud of the response from our community."

Winter caps for men, women and children can be dropped off at the UWS Athletic offices on the second floor of the Marcovich Wellness Center. For further questions, contact Jon Garver at (715) 395-4614.
