Meet your new president: Jessica Duffy
by Jessica Hamilton, Staff Writer
Jessica Duffy, the new president of the Student Government Association, has big plans this year. Plans that will hopefully students more involved on campus.
One of the main standpoints in Duffy’s campaign for running for the position was getting students involved and aware of their power and resources available to them.
Duffy says she not only wanted to step up her leadership but to also help out the University of Wisconsin - Superior campus in any way she could.
Although she is stepping up her leadership, she also has plenty of past leadership roles like Social Programmer for the Residence Hall Association 09-10, Special Events Director for the Yellow Jacket Activities Crew 09-11, she was also a senator for the Business/Economics/TED departments last year and co-planned the Leadership Academy 2009-10, so this type of position is not new to Jessica.
“My campaign mostly revolved around getting students more involved with SGA and the campus itself,” Duffy said.
She wants students to be aware of the powers they have. She says the SGA can’t make the best decisions or speak on behalf of students if communication between the association and the rest of the student body doesn’t happen.
Both Jessica and Katelyn Baumann, SGA Vice President, look forward to working with the student body to make it “more than just a filter, but an organization that can make an impact.”
Some projects have even been started for this year already. Duffy says they have started what they call “pet projects” where each senator and director has taken a project they would like to complete within the year.
Some things that her and Baumann have started working on for the year include making student organization and operation easier by working with Student Activities Specialist Allison Gerland to plan a fall training for leaders of the organizations.
Duffy has one message for the student body: “This is your campus, let us know what you would like to see become of it. Have a wonderful year!”
