Kunzelman named All-American

Melissa Kunzelman, goaltender for the University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team, has been named an All-American for the 09-10 hockey season.
Kunzelman began her hockey career when she was five years old in her hometown of Brandon, Manitoba. She played as a forward until she was in grade four, when she began to goal tend. She then went on to play throughout high school.
“High school hockey isn’t your best age group…so I played girl’s hockey up until grade eleven, and then grade eleven and twelve I joined our guy’s high school team because it was the best team that I could play for,” Kunzelman said.
Women’s hockey head coach Dan Laughlin said that Kunzelman has been “great to work with” and “was awesome right from the start”.
“[Kuzelman’s] attitude coming in as a freshman was consistent throughout her four years as a Yellowjacket, and contributed greatly to our success,” Laughlin said. “I am very proud of Melissa’s accomplishments, she has earned them. She is in our record books as being one the best goaltenders in school history and has also meet her career goals in her academic studies. She was a great teammate, and has set the level of excellence at her position.”
After graduating with a degree in exercise science, Kuzelman is planning on going home to Canada; however, she may be returning in the fall if she doesn’t complete all of her internship hours by the end of May.
“I’ll miss playing hockey for sure,” Kunzelman said. “I thought we had a good group this year [for hockey]…it took us a lot to get together before playoffs this year, but we’re definitely more of a team.”
Kunzelman said she attributes most of her success to her team.
