The Head of the Lakes Job Fair didn’t have a shortage of potential employers. The fair held on the University of Wisconsin - Superior campus Wednesday attracted 55 employers and hundreds of potential employees.
UW-Superior Career Services Specialist Betsy Gregg says she was excited to see the final turnout.
“We were hoping for 30 this year because of the recession and we were pleasantly surprised to get about 60 here today. If it’s not a part-time job, full-time or a seasonal position, they are offering internships.”
UW-Superior Career Services coordinated with the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and the College of St. Scholastica to create the fair.
David Stahlberg, a senior at UW-Superior, said he was amazed by the number of people who showed up.
“Basically every booth has someone up talking with them. Kids are handing out resumes; everyone is all dressed up nice. Sometimes you wander around corners and it’s elbow to elbow with people,” said Stahlberg.
Biology Major Tony Gilane said he hopes to find a job in any field.
“I’ve been searching websites, job sites, for potential employment during the summer, hopefully permanent and I think this is a great opportunity. It provides me with other avenues other than science or environmental fields to look for jobs. And some of the employers, the people I’ve talked to so far will take me in my field even though I’m a science major,” said Gilane.
Gilane, a senior at UW-Superior, says he encouraged other students to attend as well.
“I tried to get the word out as much as I could to other students to urge them to attend here because like I said, if you’re a science major or a business major, this is the place. You don’t have to spend so much time looking at the internet screen.”
Maurices Human Resources Specialist John Zbikowski says he received a great deal of resumes. Zibokowski and Maurices Staffing Intern Justin Haats offer a few tips on standing out among the crowd.
“The more professional someone dressed, the more you know they really care about trying to find a position,” said Zibokowski.
“I would say personalities, and if I can tell they’ve been researching the company, that’s a plus too. They know about the internships we have available so they’re not just coming up, ‘oh, what is Maurices?’ You know, they know a little bit about the company and they’ve done their research,” said Haats.
“We don’t base everything solely off appearance but first impressions definitely play a role,” said Zibokowski.
The next Head of the Lakes Job Fair is scheduled for the fall.
