The University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team swept 2 games against Finlandia University this weekend as they won 2-0 Saturday night while continuing the shutout streak Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory.

On Saturday evening, the Jackets got off to an early lead against the last place Lions as sophomore Ashley Martin took a feed from her line mate Ashlee Olson and put the puck past Finlandia goalie Stephanie LaMore. After the goal however, LaMore went on a tear and shut the Jackets out with 34 saves through the 2nd period.

Although the score was only 1-0 for the Jackets, they were outplaying the Lions severely as they outshot them 34-11 through only two periods and 46-14 in total. The 2nd Jacket goal did not come until 19:35 of the 3rd period when LaMore was pulled for an extra attacker. Junior Shana Katz took a feed from freshman Chelsey Wierschem and put the puck into the empty cage sealing the 2-0 victory.

Senior Brittany Bembeneck recorded the 2nd assist on the goal, which was also her 1st point of the year.  Jackets senior goalie Melissa Kunzelman recorded her 4th shutout of the year improving her record to 8-6-2 with a 1.43 Goals against Average.

Sunday afternoon saw much of the same for the Jackets. Plenty of shots and LaMore making many saves.

The first period was all Jackets as they controlled much of the play and only held the Lions to 3 shots while they threw 16 pucks at LaMore.  The first scoring action of the game came 16:16 into the 2nd period on the powerplay as senior Jodi Holland took a Brittany Dunkel pass and scored her 5th of the season.

Holland was not done there, however, as she answered 1:15 into the 3rd period for her 2nd powerplay goal of the game. Dunkel and fellow defenseman Allie Pullar picked up the assists.

After her 2nd goal of the game, it only seemed right if Holland picked up the natural hat trick. And so she did. She took a pass from junior Teagan Cassan and finished off the hat trick. Sophomore Torri Shelafoe got the secondary assist.

The 3-0 lead was all senior Amie Meyer needed as she shut down the Lions for her 2nd shutout of the year. Her record now improves to 3-1 while the team is now 11-7-2 overall with a 5-5-2 conference record. Holland’s hat trick was the Jackets first one of the year and also gave Holland the team led in scoring as she now has 14 points including 7 goals.

The Jackets return to action Tuesday night as they take on non-conference rival St.Thomas at Wessman Arena. Game time is at 7:05pm.
