The UWS men’s hockey team got off to a rough start to the season this October 30 and 31, losing both games against UW-River Falls at Wessman Arena.
Game one on Friday night was a hard-fought game with the ‘Jackets losing 2-1.
Senior captain Tyler Fletcher started the scoring with 18 seconds left in the first period, but that was the only scoring UWS would see as the Falcons notched a goal in both the second and third periods.
Goaltender Mike Rosett played well in his first start for UWS, stopping 19 out of 21 shots faced.
Game two on Halloween night was a different story as there were 11 goals scored. Although the ‘Jackets outshot River Falls 43-25, the Falcons came out on top 7-4.
It was a game of poor goaltending and penalties for UWS. After a solid game the night before, Rosett started the game in the net and gave up three goals in the first period. He was replaced by Bryan Dalbec in the second period.
Penalties didn’t help the ‘Jackets, as three of the seven goals they gave up were on power plays. UWS had two 10-minute misconduct penalties and another game misconduct, which resulted in disqualification.
Both captains had solid games for the ‘Jackets, with Fletcher scoring two goals and Brian Bina adding a goal and an assist.
Senior All-American Braden Desmet scored his first goal of the year in this contest as well.
UWS will look to clean up its play and come out strong at Wessman Arena this coming weekend when they face Concordia College on Friday, November 6 and St. John’s University on Saturday, November 7.
