The University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team played a tough UW -Stevens Point squad January 22 and 23, ending with a split, losing 2-1 Friday night and winning 1-0 Saturday afternoon.

Friday night’s game was all about special teams. Similar to six of the last seven games, the Jackets bulged the twine first as sophomore Ashlee Olson took advantage of a Pointers penalty and beat Pointer goalie D’andra Phillips 8:46 into the first period. Seniors Jasmine Pollock and Jodi Holland picked up the helpers on the goal.

Although the Jackets dominated the first period, the second period was far from consistent. Only 4:17 into the second, the Pointers answered as Kelsea Martilock capitalized on a Jackets penalty and knotted the game up at 1-1.

Much like Phillips did in the first, Jackets goalie Melissa Kunzleman dominated the second period and kept the Jackets from falling behind. Both goalies then kept their teams in the game until the Jackets took a late penalty in the third period.

With the five on four advantage and only 3 minutes left in the game, the Pointers pressured the Jackets until a loose puck found its way to the point where Sarah Phillips ripped a shot through traffic to give the Pointers the 2-1 lead. The last minute goal was all the Pointers needed as they snapped the Jackets six game point streak and took a much needed road win.

Kunzelman ended the game with 22 saves while Phillips answered with 39. Pollock’s first period assist gave her an eight game point streak.

Saturday afternoon’s game was the annual Pink the Rink game. Each Yellojacket player wore pink jerseys and socks while the jerseys were raffled off after the game with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer research foundations. Roughly 300 people attended the game making it the most people at a game this season. Much like Friday night, Saturday’s game was dominated by goalie play.

The first period started the same as Friday. At only 8:27 into the frame Holland took a nice breakout pass from Senior Kim Schmeichel and potted her fourth goal of the year. Junior Teagan Cassan tallied the secondary assist.

Holland’s first period goal was all that Kunzelman needed as she turned aside all 18 shots she faced and stayed strong during a last second flurry from the Pointers to give her the third shutout of the year.

The 1-0 win was the third shutout in the last four games for the Jackets. Kunzelman now improves to 7-4-2 with a 1.45 GAA while the team is now 9-4-2 and 3-3-2 in conference play.

The Jackets are now sixth in the conference with eight points, while Lake Forest is leading with 16 points.

Pollock’s eight game point streak was snapped in Saturday’s win. Holland, Pollock, Olson, and freshman Chelsey Wierschem are now all tied for the team lead with four goals.

The Jackets face a quick turnaround as they travel to St.Peter, MN January 26 to take on the non-conference rival Gustavus Adolphus. Earlier in the year the Jackets defeated the Gusties 3-2.

The next home series is this weekend, January 29 and 30 as the Jackets take on Adrian in a pair of conference games. Friday’s game starts at 7 PM.
