The University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team continued their trend of close games this weekend as they split games with the University of Concordia-Morehead Cobbers.
On Friday night, the ‘Jackets took a close decision as they won 3-2 against the Cobbers, who were previously 2-1-0 on the season.
They jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period as Sophomore Becca Kent potted her first career UWS goal with the helpers going to Senior Jess Tyra and Junior Lindsey Legree.
Kent’s first goal was a special one, as last season she dawned the Cobbers’ colors.
In the second period, UWS took over and scored two short handed goals from Tyra and Junior Shana Katz making it 3-0 into the third.
In the third, the Cobbers made a game of it as they responded with two unanswered goals late, but they couldn’t get the third by Senior Melissa Kunzelman who turned aside 36 shots in the victory. Legree and Tyra both had two points in the win.
On Saturday night, the ‘Jackets took command again in the first period as Kent scored her second goal in as many nights to put the ‘Jackets up by one through the first.
The ‘Jackets offense went silent after that, however, as Cobbers’ goalie Desiree Goret took over and saved the remaining 31 shots the ‘Jackets threw at her.
While Goret was shutting the ‘Jackets down, the Cobbers scored a goal early in the second to tie it up. They then scored with 4:36 remaining, putting away the ‘Jackets and sealing the 2-1 victory. In all, Goret saved 41 shots while Kunzelman had another stellar game turning aside 34.
The ‘Jackets jump right back into action as they play the second-ranked Gustavus Adolphus Gusties on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and then cap of the week with a road series on the weekend against another nationally-ranked opponent in UW-River Falls.
